RESOLUTION: Field issues involving golf and utility vehicles that will not operate or operate intermittently can often be traced to loose and sometimes corroded electrical connections. Corroded connections are most prevalent in coastal environments where vehicle electrical components are exposed to salt air, sand and water, but can also occur in other locations where salt contamination isn’t an issue. Electrical and electronic components are generally connected to the vehicle’s electrical system through any number of quick-disconnect plugs found in the wiring harness. These connections can sometimes fall victim to the entry of moisture, causing corrosion that creates a situation where the vehicle fails to operate or operates intermittently or erratically for no apparent reason. These conditions can be difficult to diagnose and can resultin additional service time spent locating the source of the problem and making repairs.

There is a product available that has the ability to not only clean corrosion from electrical connections, but can prevent its reoccurrence. This product is manufactured by Lear Chemical Research Corporation and marketed under the brand name of Corrosion Block® (Figure 1). This product, specifically designed for the marine environment, has been found to be an excellent corrosion cleaner/inhibitor and is recommended by Club Car, Inc. for servicing and performing preventive maintenance on electrical components in golf and utility vehicles.
